The Four Laps: What Josh Kerr's Mile World Record Teaches Every Runner About Pacing

 

Two of Josh Kerr's lap splits on Saturday were separated by one one-hundredth of a second.

Lap 2: 55.76 seconds. Lap 3: 55.77 seconds.

He was running at world record pace. He was alone on the track from 1200 meters onward, carrying the full weight of "Project 222" — a goal he had declared publicly five months earlier. And across 800 meters in the middle of the fastest mile in human history, the difference between his two middle laps was 0.01 seconds.

That is not a coincidence. That is pacing.

What Just Happened

On July 18, at the London Diamond League, Kerr ran 3:42.66 to break Hicham El Guerrouj's mile world record, which had stood since 1999. El Guerrouj's 3:43.13, set in Rome, had survived 27 years of shoe innovation, altitude training camps, pharmacological scrutiny, and a full generation of runners who defined their careers by how close they could get to that number. Thinly-shod elite fields ran sub-3:48s by the dozen. Nobody ran sub-3:43.

Kerr took 0.47 seconds off the record on Friday evening in London. Runner's World reported the time seconds after the finish [1]; World Athletics confirmed the ratification [2]; and LetsRun.com, which had been tracking Kerr's public record attempt under the "Project 222" flag since March, called it "the ballsiest world record in the history of middle-distance racing" [3].

The record is historic. The pacing is instructive.

The Four Laps

Here is exactly what Kerr ran, with pacers Brannon Kidder and Zan Rudolf taking the field through the early stages:

The pacers peeled off, as scheduled, at around 800-1000 meters. From 1200 meters onward, Kerr was alone.

The spread across his first three laps: 1.02 seconds. Three laps at 55-second pace, controlled to within one second of each other. Abbiss and Laursen's landmark review of athletic pacing strategies established that even-split and slight negative-split execution consistently produces optimal performance outcomes at distances from 800 meters to the marathon [4]. Kerr ran exactly that: controlled early, metronomic through the middle, and slightly slower in the final lap — not because he faded, but because he was running alone into a headwind of expectation with no rabbit to key off.

The final 56.38 is not a fade. It is the tax you pay for running three near-identical laps in the middle of the most scrutinized mile in a generation.

The Part Most Runners Miss

Every post-race analysis you read this week will focus on the first lap (54.75, the fastest of the race) or the finish (the final kick, the crowd, the clock). The part that actually explains why Kerr broke the record is laps 2 and 3.

The instinct at world record pace, when you feel good, when the pacers are still with you, when the crowd is building, is to run lap 2 faster than lap 1. To surge. To feel the moment. Nearly every failed world record attempt in the last decade has died at 600-800 meters when the athlete let adrenaline dictate the second lap. Running lap 2 in 55.76 when you just ran 54.75 requires a specific kind of discipline: the discipline of not responding to what your body wants to do.

Kerr ran 55.76. Then 55.77. He did not surge. He held. He let the finish come to him.

This is the principle that scales to every distance and every runner, from the mile to the marathon. The runner who runs the middle miles at controlled, consistent effort is the runner who has something left for the finish. The runner who runs the middle miles responding to adrenaline, to competitors, to the crowd, to pace anxiety — that runner runs lap 2 in 53 seconds and dies at lap 4. The discipline of the middle is the race.

The Called Shot

Project 222 was not a vague ambition. On March 28, 2026, Kerr posted a public declaration: he would break 3 minutes and 43.13 seconds at the London Diamond League on July 18. He named the project after the number of seconds in El Guerrouj's record.

He then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where his coach Danny Mackey had him training at 5,335 feet of altitude. The day before the London race, Kerr posted a 1200-meter time trial on Strava, run at altitude at a pace faster than his eventual world record lap splits. It was a confidence-building simulation, not a race. He was telling himself: the pace is real, the preparation is complete, the plan is ready to execute.

The altitude, the declaration, the time trial: none of that is visible in the 3:42.66 on the scoreboard. It is visible in the 55.76 and the 55.77. Commitment to a plan is what allows you to hold your pace when instinct says to chase. Kerr had rehearsed these splits, literally. The execution was the follow-through on months of patient preparation, which is exactly what week 4 of any good training block should feel like. The quiet miles are on Instagram this week. Kerr's race is what they build toward.

The Lineage

Roger Bannister ran the first sub-4 mile in Oxford in 1954 (3:59.4). Sebastian Coe set 3:47.33 in Brussels in 1981. Steve Cram ran 3:46.32 in Oslo in 1985. British milers held the world record for most of 14 consecutive years in the 1980s before El Guerrouj took it in a generation-defining run in Rome.

There has always been something about British runners and tactical discipline over raw speed. Kerr, raised in Edinburgh and now training in New Mexico, is that tradition's latest chapter. The fastest, so far.

What This Means for Your Next Race

You will not run 54 seconds for 400 meters. But you will face the same decision Kerr faced on Saturday at the 600-meter mark: do you respond to the moment, or do you hold the plan?

The runners who answer that question correctly — who run their second and third miles at the pace of their first, who do not surge when they feel good in mile 3 of a 5K, who do not let excitement detach them from the effort they have trained for — are the runners who run the back half stronger than the front.

That is the negative split. At 3:42.66 and at 4:30:00 and at every pace in between, the principle is identical: control the middle, and the finish takes care of itself.

Kerr ran it at the limit of human speed. The discipline is the same at yours.
