The Best Summer Races Are Training Runs for Fall
Last Saturday, someone you know ran a 10K in 85-degree heat and felt like they failed. Their spring PR was 41:30. They ran 43:15. The math in their head said two minutes slower equals two minutes worse, and now they are questioning their training, their fitness, and whether this whole running thing is slipping away from them.
Here is what actually happened: they ran the exact same effort they ran in April. Heat just charged them a tax for it. The same tax, incidentally, that every runner pays when the temperature climbs above 60 degrees. The tax is not a fitness problem. It is a physics problem. And the runner who understands that is the one who arrives at the fall starting line with a spring in their stride, while everyone else limps in carrying the accumulated weight of a summer spent fighting numbers that were never going to cooperate.
This is not an argument for trying less hard. It is an argument for trying hard at the right things.
The Problem With Summer PRs
Summer is a terrible time to run a personal best. This is not opinion. It is thermodynamics. The research on pacing and thermoregulation is consistent and unambiguous: for every 5 degrees Fahrenheit above 60, sustainable pace slows by roughly 5 to 7 seconds per mile. At 75 degrees, you have already given back 15 to 20 seconds per mile before you take a single step faster than easy-run effort. At 85 degrees, you are running a different race than the one you trained for in April. Your cardiovascular system is shunting blood to your skin for cooling instead of to your working muscles. Your heart rate at a given pace is 10 to 15 beats higher. Your perception of effort shifts upward because your brain is receiving signals from thermoreceptors that this is harder than it should be [1].
None of this is failure. It is the body doing exactly what it evolved to do: regulate temperature so you do not die. The mistake is treating a summer race as a PR attempt when the conditions have already decided that your PR is off the table before the gun fires.
The smarter move, the one that elite runners and coaches have understood for decades, is to treat summer races as something else entirely. Not as goal races. As training tools that happen to issue finisher medals.
How to Actually Use a Summer Race
There are three ways to extract value from a summer race that has no business being a PR attempt. Each one requires a deliberate mental shift before you pin on the bib.
**One: run it as a paced long run.** Pick a target effort, not a target time. Decide before the start that you will run at marathon effort, or threshold effort, or whatever effort level lets you finish the race feeling like you could do it again the next day. The number on the clock is irrelevant. What matters is that you got 6 or 10 or 13 miles at a controlled, sustainable effort in conditions that forced your body to adapt to heat stress. That adaptation pays out in October when the temperature drops and your fitness suddenly uncovers itself. **Two: use it as a pacing laboratory.** A summer race is the safest place to practice the pacing skills that will matter in the fall, because the stakes are low and the conditions are honest. Run the first mile slower than feels natural and check your split. If you can execute a disciplined start when your body wants to go fast and the temperature is rising, you can execute one when the temperature is 50 degrees and the stakes are real. Practice your halfway check-in: ask at the midpoint whether you have more to give or whether you are already borrowing from the second half. Practice the final 10 percent decision: do you push, hold, or protect? The result on the clock does not matter. The decisions you made during the race do.
**Three: treat it as a gear stress test.** This is where the things you wear and carry earn their place in your fall race kit, or get discarded before they can ruin a goal race.
