You know that feeling. You are scrolling through your calendar on a humid July evening and you count the weeks between now and race day. Ten weeks. The number sits there with a quiet urgency, and right on cue, your brain offers you a story: you should have done more already. You need to ramp up now. The next three weeks are the most important weeks of your entire training cycle and if you waste them, everything is lost.

That story is wrong.

Ten weeks out is not a panic point. It is the hinge. The runner who treats the next month correctly will arrive at September workouts in a completely different position than the runner who panics, compresses, and breaks. The difference has nothing to do with training volume in any single week. It has everything to do with understanding what phase you are actually in.

The Phase You Think You Are In vs. The Phase You Are Actually In

Most runners treat the 10-week-out mark as the beginning of the meat of marathon training. They look at their training plan and see weeks 5 through 14 as the stretch where the real work happens, and they feel behind before they have even started.

The reality is more forgiving and more demanding at the same time. If your goal marathon is in October, you are currently finishing a base phase that started in June or July. The work you did in those months (the easy miles, the heat adaptation, the discipline of running slower than felt right) is not a warmup. It is the foundation that determines how much you can absorb in the training block ahead.

You do not need a complicated plan for the next four weeks. You need three things.

First, hold your current weekly mileage steady. If you are running 30 to 35 miles per week comfortably, stay there. If you are running 45 to 50, hold that. The goal is not to add volume. For New York runners (November 1), you are at 14 weeks. You have more runway, which is an advantage if you use it correctly. The temptation will be to start specific work early because you have time. Resist it. Hold the base phase through August. Your peak weeks come in September, and an extra month of aerobic foundation is never wasted.

For Berlin runners (September 27), you are at 9 weeks. Your window is tighter, which means your base work needs to be clean. No wasted weeks, no detours into unplanned hard sessions. You transition to specific work within two weeks, which is only sustainable if you arrive there without accumulated fatigue.

The Sentence That Closes July

Here is the honest truth: the runner who wins their fall marathon has already done most of the work that will make it possible. The aerobic base built in June and July is the single largest predictor of whether the training block that follows succeeds or fails. Ten weeks out is not the beginning of something. It is the moment where the foundation you laid becomes visible as you stand on it.
